The Harrier’s unique V/STOL capability made it an attractive proposition to the Marine Corps since it appeared in many respects to be almost tailor made for the traditional ’Flying Leatherneck’ mission of furnishing support to ground forces in and around a beachhead. The Harrier also had the potential to provide tactical air support where it was most wanted, while at the same time eliminating the need for lengthy transit flights to and from the battlefield due to its ability to take off and land from any piece of firm ground or Marine assault ships.
