The medium-range Convair B-58 Hustler was the B-52’s supersonic counterpart. Entering service in 1960, it had phenomenal performance, but it was a complex, costly machine. After a ten-year career the B-58 was retired, mainly for economic reasons.
Powered by four General Electric J-79 afterburning turbojets each delivering a maximum of 69.4 kN (15, 600 lb st), the B-58 could reach a speed of 2128 km/h (1, 322 mph). It had a range of 8248 km (5, 125 miles) and could carry over eight tones of nuclear bombs.
