Much trumpeted as Hermann Goring’s ironsides’, the Gruppen equipped with the BF-110 long range heavy fighter seemed an inspired idea at a time when air arms the world over were obliged to diversify into many different combat aircraft types to fill an expanding number of roles.
BF-110s were widely used during the early part of the war but their use in daylight was curtailed by Allied fighters. A more useful role was that of a fighter bomber and during the battle, some important lessons were learned. Losses were often high but in the ground attack role BF-110’s fitted with fuselage and wing bomb racks continued to be used throughout the war. It remained a versatile type and was adapted to carry a comprehensive list of Rustsatz field conversion kits which included heavy caliber guns, under wing rocket tubes and external fuselage fuel tanks to extend range.
