The C-46 first flew as the CW-20 airliner on March 26 1940, deliveries of the A model starting in July 1941. With its portly fuselage it was able to accommodate a cargo of around 12,000 lb (5,440 kg). As the need for transports increased C-46 served in many theatres, coming into its own in the Far East.
