The C-5 Galaxy which was originated with a 1963 USAF CX-HLS (Cargo Experimental-Heavy Logistics System) requirement for a capability to carry 250,000 lb (113400 kg) over 3,000 miles (4828 km) without air refueling. The C-5 Galaxy remains to be the USAF’s most valuable airlift asset, serving with an Air Mobility Command wing on each coast and a training unit at Altus. Its primary mission is to carry equipment and vehicles, although it can be configured for up to 363 passengers.
