30 March 1964, a prototype for a Skymaster flew which differed in having a retractable undercarriage and up-rated 210-hp (157-kW) Continental IO-360-C engines. In December 1966, the Model O-2A was ordered by the USAF for forwarding air control duties with wing hardpoints for marker flares, rockets, or gun pods, a total of 501 O-2As was delivered from April 1967.
