Development of Super Stallion can be traced back to the late 1960s. Many features of CH-53E include an up rated transmission driving a seven-bladed main rotor (older models have a six-bladed rotor), with a tail pylon canted to port by some 20 degree. In addition, the CH-53E has a longer fuselage, allowing it to carry a maximum of 55 fully equipped troops, wheeled vehicles or palletized cargo. In Marine Corps service, the CH-53E attained operational status during June 1981 and now equips at least five first-line squadrons as well as a couple of training units.
