The West’s principal AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) platform is the Boeing E-3 Sentry. The E-3, on a typical mission, has a un-refueled endurance of 11 hours. It routinely refuels and stays aloft for up to 18 hours. It carries a crew of 20, including 16 mission specialists such as weapon controllers, radar operators and communications specialists. In the year 1984, 10 E-3As were modified to E-3C standard with slightly larger crew capacity, five additional consoles and radios and have quick communications equipment.
