The Tornado IDS is a low-altitude interdictor aircraft that can accommodate one pilot and one weapons systems officer seated in tandem. Italy is converting the IDS squadron to ECR standard, the UK has converted some for maritime strike, and others for tactical reconnaissance. It has a maximum speed of Mach 2.2 at low level, a range of 2100 nm (3890 km) and is pwered by two turbo-union RR 199-34R Mk 101 turbofans with a thrust of 17 400 lb (77.4 kN), 269 680 lb (132 kN) with afterburner. There were different variants for the IDS such as the Tornado ECR for defense suppression, the GRMk 1A for reconnaissance and the GRMk 1B for maritime strike.
