The Grumman F-8F Bearcat was one of the smallest fighters ever ordered by the US Navy, it was to be the successor to the F6F Hellcat, the intervening number being taken up by the F7F Tiger cat. The atomic bomb strikes curtailed operational deployment of the Bearcat in WWII.
