The McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender is based on the DC-10 Series 30CF commercial freighter/airliner. It was obtained to satisfy the ATCA (Advanced Tanker Cargo Aircraft) requirement. In a competition with the Boeing 747 in December 1977, the KC-10A emerged victorious when the USAF indicated its intention to purchase 16 aircraft, this number was substantially increased in December 1982. The KC-10 was purchased primarily to support fighter deployments, carrying fuel, supplies and personnel.
