A requirement was developed to upgrade the capability of the Fast FAC A-4s. These directed the close air support efforts of the Marine Corps against land targets in Vietnam. Initial orders of OA-4M were outfitted and flight-tested at NATC Patuxent River, Maryland in July 1978. The main role of the OA-4M was to go down among the terrain, marking targets selected by the ’mud Marines’ with rockets, and calling in the heavier firepower. The OA-4Ms were basically TA-4F’s modified with the electronics of the OA-4M, the main USMC close-support aircraft.
