The Tornado is a two-seat multi-role combat aircraft which was developed and manu-factured by the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany and introduced into the Bundeswehr from 1981 onwards.
As of 2. January 2007, the German Air Force flying units are equipped with 188 Tornado aircraft, 35 of them being Tornados ECR optimized for the location and engagement of radar systems. Within the scope of the transformation of the Bundeswehr, the German Air Force also took over the task of antisurface air operations from the German Navy in 2005. As a result, all German Navy Tornados were transferred to the German Air Force. The overall flight hours performed by all tornado aircraft add up to approximately 1,030,000.
