In response to a 1956 USN requirement for a high-speed, all-weather, long-range SAR, liaison, and utility helicopter led to the development of Seasprite. The SH-2F, which also bears the LAMPS I, was first delivered in May 1973. The primary role of the SH-2F is concerned with extending the area of protection on the outer defensive screen of a carrier battle group.
