T-34C Turbo-Mentor was the cornerstone of the US Navy and Marine Corps pilot training since the 1950s. Flown for the first time on 21 September 1973, 352 models were subsequently received by the US Navy. The T-34C is still the principal basic trainer and the first machine to be mastered by aspiring pilots. The Turbo-Mentor is operated in very limited numbers but has been in use with several fleet replacement-training squadrons during the past couple of years.
