The U-2 is still the official backbone of US tactical reconnaissance after an incredible 40 years of service. It is a single seat, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and can carry a variety of cameras and electronic surveillance equipment to an altitude of 90 000 ft (27 430 m). Several U-2Rs fitted with dorsal pods for carrying extra equipment were built, but one was lost on take-off in 1995. It has a maximum speed of 430 mph (693 kmh), and is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney J75-PW-13B turbojet with a thrust of 17,000lb (75.6kN). There were other variants such as the U-2RT/TR-1B two-seat trainer, the U-2S re-engine version, and the ER-2 Nasa earth survey aircraft.
