The first example of the U-21 flew in March 1967 and a total of 161 were eventually purchased. The U-21A utility aircraft could accommodate 10 combat troops, six command personnel, or three stretcher patients and three seated casualties. Some were adapted for special Elint tasks, designations ranging from RU-21A to RU-21E according to the equipment and power plant installed. About a dozen others have been reconverted for the utility role to join approximately 100 surviving U-21s.
