The first production of the UH-60A Black Hawk flew on 17 October 1978 and entered service with the 101st Airborne Division in June 1979. The Black Hawk demonstrated considerable advances over the Huey. The nominal load was two pilots, one crew chief / door gunner and 11 troops, but the cabin could take up to 20 if required. Also, heavy external loads could be carried from a cargo hook, and overall performance, notably under ’hot-and-high’ conditions, was dramatically improved.
