The P-3 Orion’s development began in 1957 when the US Navy issued a request for proposals for a new advanced ASW and maritime patrol aircraft, adding that it would look favorably upon a variation of a type that was already in production. Various improvements were incorporated during the course of manufacture, which results in at least four different sub-types joining Fleet units. Production of the P-3C for US Navy use totaled 279.
